These four words share a common Latin root, "vocare" (meaning "to call"), but have distinct meanings:

1. Evoke – to bring up a feeling, memory, or response

The smell of freshly baked cookies evoked memories of my childhood.

His speech evoked a sense of nostalgia among the audience.



2. Invoke – to call upon a higher power, law, or authority for help or support

She invoked her right to remain silent.

The priest invoked a blessing upon the congregation.



3. Revoke – to take back or cancel a decision, law, or right

4. Provoke – to stir up strong emotions, usually anger or irritation
